‘FREE’ is a limited edition 1/5 photography print by award-winning photographer, Ron Timehin. The framed piece is currently exhibiting at his inaugural exhibition, ‘We Who Belong’ in London and is available to purchase on SOTA along with further unframed limited edition prints.
Located on the shores of Lake Volta in Ghana, this series looks at life shaped by an artificial inland sea. Built between 1961 and 1965 with funding from the World Bank, the United States and the United Kingdom, the Akosombo Dam created Lake Volta, the largest man-made lake in the world by surface area, and displaced approximately 80,000 people from 700 villages. These were communities who had lived on that land for generations; the water now covering the places they once called home. Many were resettled in 52 new townships, promised new lives and largely delivered broken ones. After conversations with local families, I arrived to photograph their adaptation to this monumental upheaval: nets repaired by hand, children learning to swim and steer canoes for the first time in their family’s history, quiet portraits of strength and moments of play. The work offers a water level view of the future learned in the shallows.
