The ground that holds us

I've been thinking about the things that give us a sense of stability, even when everything around us seems to be changing. Sometimes it is a place we return to, sometimes a relationship, a memory or simply the knowledge that something remains beneath the uncertainty. The Ground That Holds Us emerged from this feeling. Soft, flowing forms move across the canvas, suggesting shifting terrain, low clouds or currents travelling beneath the surface. Some shapes seem to rise and dissolve, while others gather into denser passages, creating a gentle tension between movement and stillness.

I built the painting with acrylic and natural sand, allowing delicate transitions of grey and soft white to develop alongside more tactile areas. Light settles differently across the textured surface, revealing subtle variations in depth and giving the composition a quiet sense of continuity.

What interests me is the idea that stability doesn't necessarily mean remaining unchanged. The ground beneath us is itself shaped by time and movement, yet it continues to support what grows upon it. For me, this painting is about the less visible forms of support in our lives: the trust, shared histories and enduring connections that allow us to move forward without losing our sense of belonging.
