From original 2025 painting 'A Plantain Lily in Malibu, CA', a large scale, close cropped image of white and green leaves of a hosta plant known as Plantain Lily against a deep Vert De Gris background. The tone of the green softens around the leaves, creating a glowing effect.
I saw White Hosta plants across California, in particular in the manicured gardens around Malibu. While they look beautiful, Hostas add nothing to the ecosystem in California. The White Hosta becomes greener throughout the year as the heat increases in their environment. Climate change is having a real-time impact on how quickly these white leaves turn green, as the increasing temperatures speed up the transformation. I was in California in March of 2024, and many of them were already almost green due to the unseasonal Spring heat.
This current collection from my ongoing Urban Nature works includes some large scale pieces inspired by time spent in diverse environments including los angeles, Las Vegas, and Puglia over the last 12 months, as well as parts of India, Canada and the Greek Islands, exploring the impact of native and non-native plant-life on local ecosystems and environments. these pieces are inspired by non-indigenous and invasive plant-life, and encourage contemplation on the impact they have on the environment, ecosystem, and community.
Painted using multiple layers of thin oil glazes of white and green pigments to build a smooth and rich colour reminiscent of the thick, heavy leaves of the Hosta.
