These are the Waves

These Are the Waves is a companion piece to She Lay Down Within the Sea mixed-media painting that continues the artist’s conversation with the sea, while offering a subtly different emotional tone. Slightly smaller in scale, the work feels more concentrated and intimate, drawing the viewer inward through its dense, tactile surface.

The palette leans strongly into more greens centrally ranging from deep, kelp-like shadows to luminous, mineral hues interwoven with flashes of blues and light that suggest movement and reflection. The surface is busy and richly layered, with marks built up and worked back, mirroring the repetitive rise and fall of waves and the constant reshaping of water against itself.

Textural elements create a sense of energy and friction, as though the painting holds the sound and force of the sea within it. The mixed media gives the surface a physical presence, evoking seaweed, stone, and shifting currents, while the vibrant colour relationships keep the work alive and dynamic.
