Using scraps of fabric that would otherwise be thrown away, this work utilises reconnection in search of new landscapes. Refusing defeat, these scraps pattern together in a collage of fabric persuasion, at once emphatically material and yet of itself, immaterial. Created, clawed together out of waste, negligible scrap-bits collected from the studio floor (carpet), the materiality of the final piece mocks our notion of the dispensable. The seemingly-nothing is made into something. Tenuous threads tread, trace over the surfaces, travelling through the fabric, binding and weaving as they go. A web of relations between the disparate and discarded is made, these connections turning separate and useless pieces into things whole and purposeful again. The effect is akin to a map, following lines across changing landscapes, always different but of necessity, connected. Organic, patchworked, mismatched and strange, this work is fragile yet defiant. It considers texture and colour, the simple joy of collaging with fabric, while also considering waste and repurposing and the excesses of the textile industry. But mostly and perhaps least importantly it just hides (holds) in its folds that secret, those weaving threads that run through everything, inescapable.
