This illustration belongs to the Flora of Resilience series and is inspired by Umbanda — a powerful Afro-Brazilian spiritual practice deeply rooted in nature. Plants are central to its rituals, embodying forces of healing, protection, and connection between the material and the spiritual. In Umbanda, herbs are often burned in smoking rituals to harmonize the energies of a place and its people. This artwork portrays two plants that hold strong protective symbolism: rue (Ruta graveolens) and guinea grass (Petiveria tetrandra). Both are traditionally used to ward off negative energies and to invoke strength and spiritual balance. By bringing these plants into a fine art context, this piece celebrates ancestral rituals and their endurance through time.

Flora of Resilience is Anni’s first series of fine art limited edition prints. Paying tribute to Brazilian culture — while celebrating plants of deep symbolic meaning for the native peoples of South America — each illustration reflects on the connection between humans and plants, touching on themes of resilience, belonging, and hope. Hand-drawn exclusively with black fineliner, the series carries one of the pillars of Anni’s work: the research into botanical subjects through scientific illustration explorations, in dialogue with culturally significant Brazilian flora. The illustrations echo both ancestral knowledge and Anni’s own roots as an artist. Limited to just 5 numbered and signed editions per illustration, this project emphasizes exclusivity and authenticity. The production process was carefully chosen to garanttee its longevity, tactile beauty, and sustainable composition. Each edition is delicately crafted in collaboration with a print master who shares her values of precision, sustainability, and craftsmanship. Every detail, from the printing process to the handcrafted tags made with leftover papers and stenciled ink, reflects Anni’s intention to care for resources and to honor the slow, intentional nature of artistic work. What makes this project unique is not only the technical excellence, but also the heart behind it: a conscious practice rooted in culture, science, and a deep love for nature and memory. Owning one of these prints means holding a piece of that story — an artwork meant to last a lifetime.
