Spārnu vēdas (Vēdas of Wings) — from Latvian vēdas: 1. the soft movement of wings; 2. wisdom and knowledge.
The installation centres on an oak branch shaped like a bird. In Latvian cosmology, the oak is a sacred tree connecting the earthly and divine realms, symbolising protection, deeper values, and eternal wisdom.
In 2020, the artist visited the beloved Kaltiņu oak near her home and found it neglected, vandalised, and surrounded by pollution. Once protected as part of Latvia’s natural heritage, the tree had lost its protection after ending up on private land.
Moved by its condition, she brought home a fallen branch to preserve and care for it. She later wove wings adorned with Latvian symbols, giving the branch a new life and allowing it to rise once again—to be honoured as an ancestor, carrying the stories, wisdom, and memory of the sacred oak.
Hele is an interdisciplinary Latvian artist whose work focuses on the intersection of nature and culture. She graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia in 2017 and studied visual arts at Escola Massana Center d’Art i Disseny in Barcelona in 2016. She furthered her education with courses in natural sciences and sound production. Hele has participated in numerous group exhibitions and held solo exhibitions and sound performances both in Latvia and internationally.
