The Gatekeeper embodies the idea of object as seer or a source of prophecy and wisdom. Its animal-like form, is a hybrid of sorts with a bulbous head. The sculpture acts as a vessel for wisdom gathered from diverse philosophies, exploring themes related to the complex and paradoxical nature of fear. The carvings draw inspiration from sources as varied as classic science fiction (Frank Herbert’s Dune) and spiritual teachings (Alan Watts and Lao Tzu).
