“Permanency” is one of the bigger pieces I’ve made, the idea of formal and informal materials is questioned, one of my biggest pieces being charcoal on a canvas, and one of the smallest oil on paper. I initially had the intent of using oil paint after finishing the charcoal, however at the time and to this day I was questioning finality. Looking at the painting then I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to change. I left the marks of previous attempts visible, as well as the fallout of the charcoal at the bottom of the composition. This painting encompassed “dynamic continuation” perfectly. The ghostly presence of the charcoal that allowed for the ultimate composition.
