A memory of Japan held in layers of water, forest and mountain. Echoes of Japan was inspired by Lake Ashi in Hakone, where Mount Fuji rises beyond the trees and the red torii gate stands quietly in the water — a view that stayed with me long after I left.
This original reduction linocut is hand-carved and hand-printed, building rich forest greens, cool water and the pale presence of Fuji in individual layers. The flash of red from the torii gate draws the eye through the landscape, while a tiny touch of gold adds something unexpected. Because each colour is printed individually by hand, every print has the subtle variations that make it unique.
Caligo Safewash Inks on Somerset Satin 300gsm Paper
40 × 40 cms
Unframed
Edition of 7, Signed and numbered by the artist. The dimensions listed refer to the actual hand-printed area of the artwork, rather than the overall paper size.
Each reduction linocut is titled, editioned and signed by hand on the front, beneath the printed image.
When mounting, I recommend having the aperture cut to reveal approximately 1.5 cm of paper around all four sides of the print. This allows the title, edition number and signature to remain visible and gives the artwork a little breathing space within the mount.
For this reason, I list the printed image dimensions rather than the paper size.
