Born in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia, Aubrey Chali is a practising, self-taught visual artist. As a mixed media painter, he uses a technique that involves drawing thousands of fine lines to create maximum impact.
This work was inspired by the Makishi tribe, who place a great emphasis on family. The figures depicted are traditional religious guardians known as divinities, who function as mediators between ancestors and the living. The belief in ancestral spirits within African religion always resurfaces in one way or the other and thus reflects a prominent feature.
Aubrey is a 2010 Ngoma awards finalist and also is an ArtList.com May 2018 Viewers’ Choice Award winner. Aubrey is also pursuing a diploma in Business Management and Entrepreneurship. Recent sales have enabled him to build his own studio space in Lusaka, Zambia, while being a great single dad raising two young daughters, one of whom is differently-abled.
ARTISTIC VISION
"What influences my art mainly are ancient cultures and nature with their lavish hues and rich textures. My art is a research study and an awareness campaign to preserve and promote our environment and also beneficial social, economic, and cultural practices. I use simple forms, mixed media, experimental processes and colour experienced as light to create a sense of wonder. I have a deep connection that brings me back time and time again to creating paintings inspired by the natural world.”
This work is available in limited edition prints (series of 8) and in A3 or A2 sizes.
