‘THE YOUNGEST KEEPER’ is a limited edition 1/5 photography print by award-winning photographer, Ron Timehin. The framed piece is currently exhibiting at his inaugural exhibition, ‘We Who Belong’ in London and is available to purchase on SOTA along with further unframed limited edition prints.
Near Jamestown, Accra, I became the first photographer to document boys undergoing initiation into the Ga traditional priesthood. The Ga are the original settlers of this region, their fishing practices built around periods of rest and renewal, ensuring the sea was never taken beyond what it could give back. The Wulomo are their ritual priests, custodians of a covenant between community and land that has held even as Accra grows around them. That covenant is under pressure, from industrial trawlers stripping the waters the Ga have fished for generations, from gentrification pushing into the oldest parts of the city and from the spread of Christianity eroding the traditions the Wulomo exist to protect. Of the boys pictured, only one will become successor to the priesthood. Dressed in freshly tailored white cloth and paper crowns, each sat for their portrait with stillness and quiet authority. These portraits sit in that in-between space: childhood, faith and the sea, before the ceremony makes its claim.
