I still remember swimming in a quiet bay in Mauritius, surrounded by remarkably clear water and countless shades of blue. Beneath the surface, everything seemed to move at a different pace. Sounds softened, familiar boundaries became less distinct, and I felt myself following the gentle movements of the sea rather than directing them.
That memory stayed with me and eventually found its way into Waltzing Underwater. Layers of deep blue, turquoise and pale white unfold across the canvas, suggesting currents that drift, overlap and gradually dissolve. The forms seem suspended between movement and stillness, like a landscape experienced from within rather than observed from a distance.
I worked with acrylic, gesso, resins and natural sand, building a textured surface where colour gathers in deeper passages before softening into lighter areas. The interaction between fluid forms and granular textures reflects the constantly shifting character of water. What interests me about being underwater is the way it changes our sense of space and time. Movements become slower, distances harder to judge, and there is a feeling of being part of something much larger than ourselves. For me, Waltzing Underwater is about that rare experience of letting go of direction and simply allowing ourselves to move with what surrounds us.
