Built between 1961 and 1965 with funding from the World Bank, the United States and the United Kingdom, the Akosombo Dam created Lake Volta, the largest man-made lake in the world by surface area, and displaced approximately 80,000 people from 700 villages. These were communities who had lived on that land for generations; the water now covering the places they once called home. Many were resettled in 52 new townships, promised new lives and largely delivered broken ones. After conversations with local families, I arrived to photograph their adaptation to this monumental upheaval: nets repaired by hand, children learning to swim and steer canoes for the first time in their family’s history, quiet portraits of strength and moments of play.
