Found clay pipes, pigment, sand on board
46 x 46 x 3 cm
This piece is created from historical clay pipes I mud-larked from the Thames foreshore, set inside a wooden board with carved recess. The spiral is a symbol of interconnectedness and the piece connects past to present and human to nature.
All materials used in this piece are natural or found. The pigments are made from crushed and powdered coal, limestone, red bricks and yellow stock bricks all sourced from the Thames foreshore. I hammer them to break them up before putting them in a nutribullet to create powder.
I love using materials that are sustainable and not shop-bought. It makes me feel connected to the earth and to my art as I know exactly what's in it. It's like eating home-grown veggies rather than ready-meals!
