Thomas Haensgen’s “Duck” from the series “Urban Reflection” suspends the viewer in a moment that feels both serene and unsettling, like the pause between an inhalation and exhalation. The solitary duck glides on a mirror-like surface that is so pristine, it looks less like water and more like a portal to an alternate reality—a visual metaphor for how fleeting and fragile existence can be.

The blurred forest in the background stretches upward as if it were chasing the sky, but its reflection remains grounded, a reminder that no matter how high we reach, we’re always tethered to our shadows. It evokes the kind of emotional dissonance you feel when you walk into your roommate eating cereal at 3 a.m., staring at the wall like they just discovered a new philosophy—but it’s just about why the milk goes in last.
