Between veils and shadows, the city hums its secrets.
In Lonely in Hong Kong III, Thomas Haensgen creates a portrait of fleeting intimacy—an image as ethereal as the morning mist veiling the skyscrapers in the distance. The silhouetted figure, half-revealed behind the soft geometry of sheer curtains, appears like a ghost inhabiting the liminal space between light and shadow, presence and absence.
The play of light recalls the delicate chiaroscuro of Helmut Newton’s work, yet Haensgen eschews seduction in favor of introspection. Here, the body becomes a symbol of vulnerability, a counterpoint to the towering metropolis outside. The juxtaposition of the private, unclothed figure and the distant, impersonal skyline captures a tension central to urban existence: the coexistence of intimacy and alienation, exposure and concealment.
This photograph invites viewers to linger in the interplay of forms and emotions. It feels like catching someone mid-thought, a moment of quiet contemplation interrupted by the persistent hum of the city. In this moment, Haensgen challenges us to look beyond the obvious, to find meaning in the spaces between—the lines of the curtain, the curve of a silhouette, the fading outline of the horizon.
