Paullinia cupana (Guaraná)

This work is part of the Flora of Resilience series.

It centers on guaraná (Paullinia cupana), a plant deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual traditions of the Sateré-Mawé people, its original guardians.

According to their cosmology, guaraná was born from the eyes of a sacred child, becoming a symbol of vitality, protection, and continuity. For centuries, it has been prepared as a ritual drink, associated with strength, presence, and collective endurance.

Here, the botanical form is approached as a carrier of memory, where myth, materiality, and lived knowledge converge. The work holds guaraná not only as a plant, but as a living structure of meaning that sustains ancestral narratives within the present.

Flora of Resilience is a series of limited edition prints that draws from Brazilian flora and its cultural, symbolic, and historical layers.

Developed through detailed ink drawings, the works originate in observational practice, while extending into an investigation of how botanical forms can operate as carriers of memory, identity, and collective experience.

Each piece establishes a dialogue between scientific attention and symbolic construction, where plants are approached not only as subjects, but as systems through which personal and cultural narratives become visible.

Produced in collaboration with a master printer, the editions are developed with a focus on material integrity, longevity, and sustainable processes.
