Josephine Baker led an extraordinary life whilst battling against the odds; born in America in 1906 and brought up in poverty, she worked for white families as a servant from the age of 8 and witnessed much racism.
Josephine became a dancer and eventually moved to France where she was very well received. She had a very successful career as an entertainer, working on stage and film and became involved in the civil rights movement. She also adopted 12 children of different nationalities and called them her 'rainbow tribe'; she wanted to prove that all peoples can live together.
During the second world war Josephine spied for the French resistance and passed on much vital information. She passed away in 1975. A truly iconic and amazing woman.
