2024, 20 x 20 x 1.5 cm, Building sand, Cement, Industrial gloss, Masonry paint, Resin on Canvas.
The surface material used in this artwork is mortar. A mixture that is roughly 80% building sand and 20% cement. It is a material that I work with occasionally when helping my dad on the building site. As an artist, however, I have worked with used mortar, the remnants of mortar that is usually thrown away. I looked closely at the process of 'rendering' an act/job that I carry out when working on the building site. It involves the application of a cement mixture to walls to create a textured or smooth surface. I worked with a similar act in this artwork to help build the mortar back up as the main structural ground and have tested the physical property of the material by putting it through a variety of experimental processes. This creates a new sense of identity, life, and purpose as a work of art.
