2025, 20 x 20 x 3 cm, Building sand, Cement, Industrial gloss, Masonry paint, Resin, Varnish on Canvas
This artwork shows my interest in elevating mortar as a material through both colour and design. Brightly coloured painted houses in Brighton, England helped to inspire my next moves.
I work with actions that are based on a combination of rules and spontaneity, which inspires a shift in myself and the work that I make. One minute, I am in the mode of a builder where I must follow meticulous and calculated actions. The next minute, I am free-flowing, integrating random actions to the materials that I am working with.
The mortar in this piece is not only made up of old broken bits of mortar taken from the building site, it has an awkward stance, which is halfway between structure and disorder or for that matter freedom.
I think this artwork displays an interesting balance between disciplined craftsmanship and the unpredictability of abstract expression.
