Oil on Canvas
65x40cm
This piece is a close-up cropped view of a Tradescantia Nanouk houseplant, often referred to as the Wandering Dude. The bold, rich layers of magenta and green are exaggerated to enhance the striking contrast of this plant, with two opposing colours emerging together on each individual leaf. The multiple glazes create the almost iridescent quality of the plant, and lifts each undulating element away from the deep blue-black background.
I use minimal pigments in my work, mixing the colours from just a few base colours to create a consistency and complementary palate that is calming, and soothing on the eye.
Through my painting I continue to study our connection with natural forms, in particular during times of growing concern and awareness of climate change. Caring for houseplants has become a popular way of improving our mental wellbeing, as plants improve our quality of life in so many ways. Taking care of something else encourages us to take care of ourselves.
The piece is framed in a black stained wood frame and comes ready to hang.
Framed dimensions are 45 x 70 cm, unframed 40 x 65 cm.
