For a While, Everything Was Quiet is an original oil painting on canvas by British artist Hannah Ivory Baker.
Painted on returning to the studio after an extended break, the work began as an exploration of the physical act of painting itself: repetition, instinct and the muscle memory of laying down paint. Loose, gestural flowers emerge from a muted grey ground through layers of yellow, green and dark earthy colour. Rather than describing every petal and leaf, Hannah allows the image to develop through broken edges, scraped-back passages and accumulated marks, recording decisions in colour, movement and texture until the surface begins to hold a history of its own.
The result sits between representation and abstraction, with recognisable flowers dissolving into paint when viewed at close range.
