Oil on canvas.
Liu's dramatic canvases dressed lavishly in vibrant acrylics and impasto oils in almost every hue, are as richly ornate as the fantastical mythologies from which their subjects derive. True to his historical artistic forebearers, Liu's work looks back to scenes of gods and heroes from classical mythology, reminding the viewer of the long-established branches of artistic pursuit that fascinated so many gencrations before us. In these works, however, Liu has chosen to stray away from wholly veritable realism, and rather to examine the potential for this type of classical subject to be reimagined by a contemporary artist, necessarily looking back at tradition with zist century hindsight. His paintings have a rather daring twist, demonstrating experimentation in color and vibrancy, bringing out parts of the composition often overlooked and leading us away from the expected key points of these works - most notably in his artistic decision to remove the heads of the figures in these two scenes.
