HANNAH THOMAS
Bradford on Avon, England, United Kingdom
Hannah Thomas is an abstract painter, currently based in Wiltshire, UK. She attended the University of the West of England in Bristol graduating with a BA hons in Art and Visual Culture, going on to pursue a career as a photographer in east London for over a decade, primarily working in the music sector.
In 2019 she chose to put down the camera and pick up the paintbrush keen to find a form of artistic expression that allowed for much greater autonomy creatively. She is currently working out of her studio in Bradford on Avon.
Her practice is based on bedrock of ideas - Absurdism, a clarion call for personal autonomy, the current societal attitudes that threaten that freedom and the inevitable moral relativism in all individuals: a plea for the release of one’s potency in a world that increasingly restricts and confines.
These issues are manifest in her work in the motifs of disembodied elements – mouths, brains, biomorphic shapes – which denote a sense of disorientation and predation as well as a sense of human frustration and confinement. It also gives her freedom as someone who has no interest in traditional figurative painting or landscapes in the context of her own practice, but instead is seeking to evoke a sense of psychological chaos and referencing the ‘id’ in each of us.
