The Flowers We Gathered is a large, expressive floral painting exploring memory, abundance and the physical act of painting. Roses and garden flowers emerge from layers of colour, movement and texture, with some forms clearly described while others dissolve back into the surface. Built intuitively in oil paint, the work records decisions in colour, movement and texture until the surface begins to hold a history of its own.
The result sits somewhere between still life and abstraction: a painting less concerned with depicting a perfect bouquet than with capturing the sensation of flowers gathered, carried and remembered.
