2019, 51 x 48.6 x 6.5 cm, Cement, Plaster, Natural clay, Air drying clay, Oil paint, Acrylic, Matt paint, Masonry paint, Paraffin wax, Microcrystalline wax, Industrial gloss, Resin, Varnish on Canvas
This artwork was made in three stages. The first stage was in 2009 when I was studying on my BA in Fine Art. The surface was just a loose piece of canvas. I experimented with a variety of coloured oil paints layering them on top. The second stage was in 2017 I was studying on my Masters in Fine Art. I took the oil paint covered canvas, some natural clay from the ground and some air drying clay, and collided all three with a range of pre-used building materials, which included cement and plaster. The final stage was in 2019, I took the canvas once more and stretched it onto a wooden frame making sure that I kept the sculptural look of the canvas that had appeared during the collision of all the materials. I then melted down some paraffin wax and microcrystalline wax and poured it all over the canvas. I started to cut into the wax with a scalpel and hot knife making sure that it was only the concave marks that were removed. This artwork demonstrates an exploration into the relationship between artist, process, and material.
'Space Of Play' was then selected for The London Group Open in 2019 and won the JPES Partnership Art Prize. A link to the exhibition and all the prize winners from the Open can be seen here -https://thelondongroup.com/the-london-group-open-2019-prize-winners/
