SOVEREIGN

‘SOVEREIGN’ is a limited edition 1/3 photography print by award-winning photographer, Ron Timehin. The framed piece is currently exhibiting at his inaugural exhibition, ‘We Who Belong’ in London and is available to purchase on SOTA along with further unframed limited edition prints. 

Labadi (La) sits on Accra’s coast on the Gulf of Guinea, a Ga community shaped by canoe fishing and fish processing as the capital grows around it. Labadi Beach, one of Ghana’s most visited beaches, now charges entry to the coastline these families once called their own. Industrial trawlers, most of them beneficially owned by Chinese corporations operating through local front companies, have driven average fishing incomes down by as much as 40% over the past fifteen years. Coastal erosion steadily swallows the shoreline while the land their community has worked for generations is absorbed into tourism economies and commercial development. Working with the Kaklamadu residents, I made portraits on the landing beach and in improvised studios, where boats, nets, a horse and flags became shared symbols. The series moves between portraits made together and quiet observation: boys at play, workers at rest, friends holding space for one another. It invites viewers to meet the Kaklamadu community on their own terms.

This photography print was shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Awards 2026.
