Evening clouds falling in the Arroscia Valley

For the past 30 years, I have frequently visited the Pieve di Teco, nestled in a pass of the Arroscia Valley, in northwest Liguria, Italy. The weather swings between stifling Summer heat and cold, damp Winters. The Spring and Autumn seasons offer a comfortable middle ground for observing the more interesting cloud formations, which are a constant presence due to the lush forests, rolling hills, and the Ligurian Alps stretching toward France. Each new day brings a collection of emerging clouds, with dramatic skies in the morning and colourful displays at sunset. Light filters through the clouds and fills the deep valleys below. In this painting, I’ve attempted to capture the movement of the light and the changing shadows that I see from my roof terrace.
