This intimate portrait continues the exploration of Foremothers, a series in which painting becomes an act of quiet retrieval. Drawn from a found photograph, the portrait resists sentimentality: its muted violets and greys hold a fragile tension between tenderness and distance. Here, the figure’s gaze does not invite but withholds; it reminds us that every image of the past carries its own small refusal to be fully known.
Sylvia Batycka’s painting practice engages with female narratives and the aesthetics of absence. Using a sartorial and photographic language, she transforms traces of the past into spectral presences that dwell between recognition and loss.
