Oil on canvas
60cm x 60cm
An elderly man looks out at the viewer through heavy, hooded eyes. The portrait is cropped at the shoulders, and the background is a solid black. Four robins rest on his head and shoulders. The robins carry symbolic weight. In some beliefs, they’re seen as signs that the dead are nearby. In this painting, they suggest that the man is approaching the end of his life. They also represent his four children, with whom he had a strained relationship. The birds don’t comfort or judge — they simply watch, just as he does. This piece reflects on how death can bring a kind of clarity or stillness. It doesn’t try to resolve anything, but it holds space for what’s left unsaid.
