This painting revisits a fragment of vernacular photography—an image of a woman and two children. Drawn from the Foremothers series, it explores how female presence lingers in the photographic trace: the gestures, garments, and expressions that remain. The subdued palette and diffused light transform the figures into spectral counterparts of themselves—neither fully past nor present. The work reflects on how absence is not the opposite of presence but its haunting continuation, a visual archaeology of intimacy and loss.
Sylvia Batycka’s practice engages with female narratives and the aesthetics of absence. Grounded in painting and informed by archival photography, her works translate the language of garments and gesture into painterly memoryscapes that hold on to silence, trace, and the in-between.
